Unfortunately for the environment, we still rely on gas for some things. And I am not referring to cars because they are too obvious. We use gas for a number of other things like lawn mowers, gas power generators, chainsaws, grass cutters, etc. We still need gas for all of this stuff, and until everything turns electric, we will keep needing it.

Storing gas, however, is no joke. Any flammable liquid should be contained correctly. Otherwise, there is the risk of explosion. Gas doesn’t need much. A small spark is enough, and everything will be gone in a puff of smoke. That is why you need to invest in high-quality gas cans. It’s not a huge investment, but I just wanted to underline the importance of keeping gas in a container that was specially designed for that purpose.
Why do you need a gas can?
Ideally, you wouldn’t keep gas around the house under no circumstances. It’s too dangerous, and accidents happen every day. But sometimes it’s good to have some extra gas around. Maybe you need to start the lawn mower, or maybe you keep a gas can in your car, just in case you are out of gas on a long trip and there are no gas stations around. Whatever the reason, you need a gas can that can store the fuel safely. Moreover, keep the gas in a place where nothing serious can happen, like a shed.
The most common concern is spilling. If you store the gas in an inadequate container, sillage can occur, and you never know what can happen from there. However, the gas cans I am talking about eliminate the risk of fire by not allowing any of the gas to spill. They are designed to keep every drop of gas safe. A high-quality gas can make dispensing fuel, easy, clean, and most important of all, safe.
Gas cans: Plastic vs. Metal
When purchasing a gas can, one of the things you need to decide is whether you want the can made of plastic or you want the one made out of metal. There is no right answer because it depends on certain things, and both kinds have advantages and disadvantages.
Plastic cans are safer than metal cans. Why? Because in case of an explosion the plastic melts, while metal acts like shrapnel. You don’t want to be anywhere near the place of explosion. Also, plastic doesn’t rust or corrode, and it can take a lot of abuse. However, plastic is not recommended for long term storage. That is because the gas can infiltrate into the plastic over extended periods of time.
Metal cans, on the other hand, are very reliable when long-term storage is concerned. Unlike plastic gas cans, metal gas cans can be stacked in storage for months. The metal doesn’t expand or contract like plastic in various temperatures. It’s true that metal rusts, but not all of it. Also, keeping it in a cold but dry place ensures a long lifespan.
As you can see, there is no rule when it comes to plastic versus metal. The only thing you can conclude is that the material of the gas can depends on the environment in which you are going to store the gas and for how long.
How to choose the right gas can for you
There are plenty of gas cans out there from various manufacturers. I don’t know if that helps or confuses you further, but choosing the right one should be easy once you have all the information at hand. So, if you don’t know anything about storing gasoline, here is what you should look for in a gas can.
- ü Size – that depends on what you need the gas can for. If you need it to store gasoline for your lawn mower or chainsaw, a two-gallon gas can should be enough. After all, how much gas can you use? If you want to go on a trip, however, a 5-gallon gas can is more appropriate. A car’s gas tank should be full anyway when you know that you are going in a place where gas is nowhere to be found, but you never know. That is why you should have a 5-gallon gas can on you. Anything larger than that is too dangerous to store, and I advise against it, but you can find those as well.
- ü Material – I already explained to you the difference between a metal gas can and a plastic one. Determine where you are going to store the gas and for how long, and then make a decision. You can find high-quality gas cans no matter the materials they are made of.
- ü Dispensing mode – if you have no problem pouring the gas wherever you need it, a simple gas can should suffice. However, you should know that there are other ways to dispense gasoline. Some products come with nozzles and special dispensers. Others have patented systems that won’t allow gas to spill. Anything that makes storing gas safely is worth investing in, even if it’s a few dollars extra.
- ü Type I or Type II – when you see this on the specifications list of a product, you should know what it means. That applies only to metal gas cans. The difference is quite simple. Type I gas cans have a single opening that you use both for filling and for pouring. They are usually equipped with a funnel. Type II gas cans have two openings. One is used for filling the container with gas, and the other is used for pouring. The best ones come with metal spouts.
There are probably other things that need to be considered, like gas cans versus diesel cans (keep in mind that it matters,) but I think the four I mentioned above are the most important. It’s worth mentioning that some gas cans come with approvals and compliances from different institutions. For example, all containers that are not CARB compliant cannot be used in California. CARB stands for California Air Resources Board.
What are the best gas cans?
As I said before, there are hundreds of such products available for purchase. Some of them are made of high-quality materials, while others are poorly constructed and won’t last a summer. The best way to know which one is which is to look at gas can reviews. People who already bought a particular product are the most qualified to say if that product is high-quality or not. That is why I compiled a list that contains three of the best gas cans on the market.
Eagle UI-50-FS Red Gasoline Safety Can
The Eagle UI is one of the safest gas cans available. You can find them in two sizes, one that has a capacity of five gallons and the other only two gallons. It’s a Type I gas can, which means there is a single whole that you can use for both pouring and filling. Stored properly, this can will last for years.
The metal is lead-free galvanized steel, which makes it highly durable and very easy to use. With only 5.2 pounds in weight, you can handle it with ease. The yellow poly funnel will make pouring spill free. The product is manufactured in the US. It meets all OSHA requirements, and even if it’s not CARB compliant you can still use it in California because it’s federally approved. It has been tested and received FM approval and is UL and ULC listed.
Other features include a flame arrestor screen and a patented comfort grip trigger release with spring closing lid and fixed Handle. It has a red powder coat finish. People who already bought the Eagle UI are more than satisfied with the product, and they go as far as saying that this is one of the best gas cans they ever had. That makes me think that it’s worth its value. Not that it’s very expensive. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.
No-Spill 1450 5-Gallon Poly Gas Can
This is not a metal gas can, but one made of plastic. But that doesn’t mean it’s not just as sturdy. The No-Spill can is made of high-quality, sturdy polyurethane plastic. It can be found in three sizes: 5-gallon capacity, 2-1/2, and 1-1/4-gallon capacity.
What I like about this gas can is that it has a thumb-activated button that controls the pouring. That makes the entire process more precise than without. The 7/8-inch funnel spout fits even small equipment. Most of the spilling happens when you need to get the spout into the gas tank. That is when the liquid comes out. The same thing happens when you remove the spout from the gas tank opening. However, that will never happen with No-Spill. You are in control of every drop because the gas will not start pouring until you push the thumb button. So you safely place the nozzle into the opening and then press the button. After you are done, just release the button, the can will close, and you cannot spill a drop when you remove the spout. Simple as that. That is why it’s called No-Spill.
The No-Spill gas can has an integrated 20 mesh stainless steel screen and comes with an attached dust cover that will keep the spout clean. The rear handle will make pressing the button while you pour very comfortable. It is CARB compliant and has an EPA approval. If you like you can also go for the Flex Spout Extension that is ideal for pouring gas into the car’s gas tank while you are on the road. The extension is sold separately, though. It can be used for gasoline, diesel, and kerosene. It has been tested and received all the necessary approvals. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.
SureCan Gas Can with Rotating Spout
The SureCan model is very similar to the previous model. It has a capacity of 5 gallons, but you can also go for the 2.2-gallon capacity or the 5-gallon for diesel. Remember never to mix them. I say that it’s similar with the No-Spill because it also has a patented thumb trigger that controls the flow of the gas. However, the opening is not located at the top of the container, but at the bottom. Not only that it’s lightweight (2.45 pounds), but you don’t even have to tip it over.
This model comes with a long, flexible, and rotating nozzle that will make dispensing gas easy no matter where you want to pour it. You can even do it without seeing watching. All you need to do is to insert the nozzle into the opening of the gas tank, and then press the button. After you are done, release the button. The excess gas will go into the tank, which means there is no chance for spilling.
SureCan gas container has a self-venting system that ensures a smooth flow without glugging. It has a child proof design, but I don’t think you’ll keep this can around children in the first place. However, if by any chance that happens, a child cannot handle the container. This model is not CARB compliant. Click here to read more reviews and buy on Amazon.
All three products seem to meet their purpose very well, but personally, I prefer the SureCan. It already comes with a nozzle, it is spill-proof, and you don’t even have to tip it to pour the gas wherever you may need it. For me, SureCan is one of the best gas cans on the market.
I cannot highlight enough the importance of storing gasoline in a safe environment and a safe can. A lot of things can happen, and some people lost the roof over their heads thanks to inadequategasoline storage. So never keep gas in regular plastic containers. It’s better to spend a few dollars now on a safe gas can than to pay laterthousands of dollars on reconstruction. Click here to buy on Amazon
